Hammer Museum
In January 1999, Ann Philbin became director of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Under her leadership, the Hammer established a dynamic, award-winning contemporary art exhibition program and expanded its range of public programs exploring contemporary issues within art, culture and society. During her tenure, the Billy Wilder Theater began construction and opened to the public in December 2006, and will be the home of the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
Before her arrival at the Hammer Museum, Philbin was director of The Drawing Center in New York for nine years. Under her direction, The Drawing Center presented works by hundreds of contemporary and emerging artists through its much lauded viewing program, and presented major exhibitions of drawings, both contemporary and historical. Before taking the helm of The Drawing Center, Philbin organized large-scale public art exhibitions and was director of the Curt Marcus Gallery and curator of the Ian Woodner Family Collection of old master drawings.
A member of the Association of Art Museum Directors, Philbin has served on the board of directors for a variety of arts and nonprofit organizations. She is currently a member of the boards of directors of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York and the American Center Foundation. Additional appointments include: committee member of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Federal Advisory Committee on International Exhibitions; panelist for the United States General Services Administration Los Angeles Federal Courthouse Commission for Art in Architecture; and jury panelist for the Bucksbaum Award, the Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award, the Heinz Awards, the Greenburger Awards and the Pat Hearn Award. |
